Welcome note

Dear colleagues, dear friends,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the Microscopy Conference MC2019 taking place in Berlin (Germany) from 1 to 5 September 2019. This conference follows the tradition of the conference series of the German Society for Electron Microscopy (DGE) in aiming to attract students new in the field of electron microscopy, technicians looking for the latest equipment and scientific methods, and also experienced scientists and world-renowned experts exchanging ideas and establishing new collaborations.
Similarly to MC2017 in Lausanne, this year’s MC will present its international character by hosting 21 Sessions featuring numerous expert speakers from all over the world. We are looking forward to offering a broad and exciting platform to experts and students in three areas of electron microscopy: instrumentation and methods, material science, and life sciences. Seven oral sessions will be dedicated to each of these three areas, with invited lectures followed by several lectures selected from submitted contributions. Each morning, outstanding plenary speakers, awardees of the Ernst Ruska Prize, as well as the presenter of the Harald Rose Lecture will give talks for a broader electron microscopy community. In the afternoon, the oral sessions will be supplemented by related poster presentations, providing ample time for discussions. In addition to our scientific program, an extensive industrial exhibition with microscope manufacturers as well as suppliers of accessories and consumables, a session with companies' presentations of their latest products, and lunch-time lectures will invite you to make full use of MC2019.

There will be  plenty of opportunities to meet speakers and colleagues, since, besides coffee breaks, every evening will have a so-called networking event, at which culinary specialities from different areas of Germany will be freely available, giving a glimpse of Germany’s cultural diversity: At the welcome reception on Sunday, the focus will be on Berlin with its typical food and drinks. On Monday, Swabian specialities will be served, while on Tuesday you can enjoy the maritime cuisine of northern Germany. Each of these networking events on the campus of TU Berlin is set up for meeting people, discussing scientific highlights of the day, and possibly making appointments for jointly experiencing the Berlin nightlife. On Wednesday evening, the last evening of the meeting, we invite you all to the conference dinner at the Hofbräu Wirtshaus Berlin, where there will be a chance to taste Bavarian food, and to listen and dance to the party show band Rosa.
This year’s MC is organized within the framework of the DFG-funded Berlin Electron Microscopy Network, which has been proposed by HU Berlin and TU Berlin. This network acted as a fertilizer for forming the Local Organization Committee of MC2019, that is supported by a number of scientist from various research institutions of the Berlin area. TU Berlin hosts MC2019 in the heart of Berlin's city. This is an ideal location from where you may use the time after the networking events to explore the city with its unique combination of youthful flair mixed with a rich historical background.
We are looking forward to a stimulating scientific and social event, and to welcoming you to the fascinating city of Berlin.
